The buds have begun to appear in the trees, sailor’s socks have been burned in the fire and the Osprey’s are returning to their nests along the Chesapeake Bay. Yes these are the signs of spring arriving in Annapolis Maryland. Funny how this time of year used to mean simply warmer temperatures and colorful flowers to me but since moving to Annapolis years ago I now look for these other tell tale signs to know that springtime is in the air.
Having become more familiar with the comings and goings of this large Bay area raptor I know that they mate for life as well as return to the same nesting grounds year after year after having spent the winter in South America. So the season of the Osprey has now begun with the arrival of the first adults who will now dutifully go about rebuilding their nests, in this photograph on a channel marker, and soon the chicks will be hatched. The young juveniles will develop while both parents provide food from the nearby waterways and set about raising them for it will then be time for them to join in the annual southern migration.
Yes it is a sign of early spring as the cycle of life on the Chesapeake Bay begins yet once again.
